06 Volkswagen Passat Oil Light Problems

2006 Volkswagen Passat with 212k started with a failed thermostat and overheating condition. Soon after the overheating occurred the oil pressure warning light comes on. The vehicle owner was sure the engine was damaged. These vehicles use a lot of plastic and when it gets hot it can become very brittle or just overtime it gets this way. After the vehicle overheating the plastic parts broke apart and plugged up the oil pickup screen.

So what’s the plastic coming from? We’ll there are a few different things and they all should be replaced. First off the valve cover had a broken up baffle “plastic”. The oil filter housing/cooler or aka oil separator. Change the oil pressure sensor on the oil separator also, its very inexpensive and not accessible without removing intake. You have to remove the intake manifold to change the oil separator assembly. We also replaced the balance chain cover “plastic” this is located bottom engine after removing oil pan.
